Wage earning and surveillance in Roman Egypt

Kim Bowes will speak on her forthcoming book on the social history of the Roman lower classes: Surviving Rome: The Economic Lives of the Ninety Percent, to be published by Princeton UP this fall. It will focus on strategies that inhabitants of the Imperium Romanum used to overcome the challenges of a never-ending ancient gig economy. Bowes is BFC Presidential Professor at UPenn and former director of the American Academy in Rome.
