Captive voices: prison graffiti and the Inquisition

Anna Clara Basilicò is a PhD candidate at the University of Padua and Ca’ Foscari University. Her research addresses the history of three Inquisitorial prisons (Palermo, Spoleto and Narni, 17-19th centuries) and explores the graphic habits of prisoners through the analysis of their graffiti and autograph defenses. These records are examined and intertwined with archival sources from the district courts to the aim of providing a closer analysis of life in prison under the jurisdiction of the Spanish and Roman Holy Office.
