Project Description
The project analyses vigilance in pre-modern Benedictine monasteries, using the Congregation of Bursfelde between ca. 1400 and 1618 as an exemplar. The close intertwining of individual and collective duty, as well as of institutional control is at the core of this investigation. Based on this, the project examines monastic vigilance and its dynamics against the background of transformative spiritual reform debates, during the Pre-Reformation, Reformation and the period of the Council of Trent.
